We are thrilled and delighted to announce that our very own Mick Slein Snr, Founding Director and CEO, was awarded a Lifetime Achievement award at the EIFI National Electrical Industry Awards held on 21st September in the Red Cow Moran Hotel. Founded in 1942, the EIFI represents the major electrical trade associations in Ireland - electrical manufacturers, distributors, contractors and lighting companies – and is dedicated to raising business, technical and safety standards across the Irish electrical industry. Incoming EIFI president Mark Keogh (vice-president of Schneider Electric Ireland) told the gathering: “The awards are a celebration of the best in individual achievements, technical innovation and supply-chain excellence within the Irish industry over the past 12 months and beyond”
As the title of the award suggests, Mick was chosen to receive this award because of all the fantastic, entrepreneurial work that he has done within the Irish electrical industry over the past 34 years. Ever since setting up LED Group in 1984, through his huge energy and vision, he has guided us to be the global lighting company we are today, with a presence in Ireland, UK, Continental Europe, Middle East, Africa, Australia and New Zealand. Cumulating in us being the largest Irish lighting company in the world!!
It all started when two school friends persuaded Mick Slein to join them in starting an electrical distribution company in a marketing and sales manager role. Soon enough they realised the potential of the market and decided to expand their product offering. The new products showed better results and under the name Traklite Systems, they became appointed agents for Eterna Lighting.
The first expansion took place in 1996 as the ROBUS brand entered the UK market. In 2008 ROBUS began to find its way to other European countries starting with members of Benelux. The Middle East market was opened to us in 2009. The Australasia office was founded in 2010 in Brisbane and quickly became an important part of the company. Two years later, in 2012, New Zealand was added to the company map. In 2014, ROBUS established itself in France and Baltic and Scandinavian countries.
In 1984 Mick was running his company from the Drumcondra office surrounded by walls covered in shelves. In 1985 the company moved to a 4,000 sq. feet building in Terenure. Five years later to an 8,000 sq. ft premises in Kilmainham. In 2005, LED Group ROBUS settled in the current premises on Nangor Road. The building includes showrooms, head office and 100,000 sq. ft purpose built warehousing and distribution centre stocking 25,000 pallets of over 1,000 leading products, distributed to 40 countries worldwide.
Mick attributes his success to his ability to attract really great people. When accepting his EIFI Lifetime Achievement Award, Mick stated, “I am delighted to accept this award, not on behalf of Mick Slein, but rather on behalf of the fantastic people I have managed to bring on this journey with me to make this a truly global lighting business.”
In light of this, we like to thank you, our customers, for being part of the journey. You are the reason we exist.
