Sports lighting must hit a few key numbers, and the first one everyone asks about is lux. Get it right and players can track the ball, spectators can follow the action, and the pitch is ready for match day. So how much light does a pitch actually need? For football, it ranges from 75 lux on a community training pitch to 500 lux at a national stadium. But lux is only one number you need to get right.
Here, we break down the lux, uniformity, and glare requirements for the sports you’re most likely to light, and show how STADION sports lighting hits the mark.
Getting sports lighting right takes more than meeting a lux target. Hit the lux but miss the uniformity or glare management, and your pitch still fails.
Lux is the amount of light landing on the playing surface. One lux equals one lumen per square metre.
Uniformity (Ud, also called U0) measures how even that light is, on a scale of 0 to 1. The closer to 1, the fewer dark patches. Boundary zones just outside the lines count too.
Glare rating (GR) measures how much discomfort the floodlights cause players and spectators. A lower number means less glare.
Sports lighting requirements change depending on the level of play. The class system helps you match the lighting design to the venue, competition level, and how the space will be used.
Class I is for national and international competition. Think large venues, big crowds, long viewing distances, and broadcast cameras.
Class II is for competitive play at club, college, and semi-pro level. It balances clear visibility for players and spectators with efficient running costs.
Class III is for training, schools, and local leagues. It delivers safe, reliable, and cost-effective light for practice and recreational play. Most grassroots projects fall into this class, so it’s where most contractors will be quoting.
It depends on the sport and which class it falls into. For football, a Class III training or local league pitch needs 75 lux with 0.5 uniformity. A Class II club match pitch needs 200 lux with 0.6 uniformity. A Class I national pitch needs 500 lux with 0.7 uniformity. The higher the level of play, the more light you need, and the more even that light has to be.
Here are the requirements for the sports we’re asked about most. Figures are shown as Class I / Class II / Class III.
Lux Levels by Sport
For every sport listed here, the maximum glare rating is 50 for Class I and II, and 55 for Class III. Lighting a different sport? Our Lighting Design Team is ready to help!
Here’s how three of our lighting designs hit their targets with STADION.
The secret is in the lenses. STADION comes with Narrow, Medium, and Wide asymmetric lenses, and you can combine them on each fitting to put light exactly where the pitch needs it.
You can check out the 2D renders for these lighting designs in our STADION lighting guide.
More light on the pitch shouldn’t mean more light in your neighbours’ windows. Symmetric floodlights spread light up and out, creating glare and spill beyond the pitch. Asymmetric optics, standard on every STADION fitting, throw light forward and down onto the playing area instead.
That’s one way we deliver our 0% light spill promise. We assess every project for light pollution, and we use the STADION front visor and ±30° module adjustment to keep light where it belongs. We also provide the documentation you need for planning permission.
How many lux does a 5-a-side pitch need?
A 5-a-side pitch on a MUGA needs 120 lux with 0.6 uniformity.
What lux level is needed for rugby training?
Rugby training falls under Class III, which needs 75 lux with 0.5 uniformity.
How many floodlights does a football pitch need?
It depends on the class and the pitch size. Our Class I design for a 100m x 70m pitch used 24 STADION 1800W fittings on six poles.
Yes, it’s free! Share your project with your local ROBUS Area Sales Manager, and our Lighting Design Team will send back 2D and 3D renders, photometric data, a material list, and light pollution results within 3–5 days. You’ll see exactly how the job will perform before you order a single fitting. STADION is available at your local wholesalers.
